    Nokia defends GSM IPR position

    -

Nokia has said it is “not surprised” that Qualcomm has “once again” chosen to litigate regarding GSM IPRs.

The Finnish company said it had not yet seen a copy of Qualcomm’s complaint (made in the UK courts – see www.mobileeurope.co.uk/2188), but “based on our current information”, it did not believe that Qualcomm was entitled to an injunction. As Qualcomm’s claims are an extension of its existing complaint in the US, no douubt Nokia knows what is at stake.

Nokia said it has 2223 decalred patents essential to GSM, which meant that Qualcomm’s position in GSM is “clearly inferior to Nokia’s.”

The scale of Nokia’s patents is no doubt behind recent comments made to Mobile Europe from Dr Sanjay Jha, vp CMDA Technologies at Qualcomm, that he considered that quality of patents to be more important than quantity.
