Openwave has announced its support for the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) Secure User Plane for Location (SUPL). The new Openwave SUPL solution will be incorporated into the Openwave® Location Manager, Commercial Edition. In addition, Openwave will host the upcoming OMA Test Fests in June 2006 in Belfast, Northern Ireland that will be a key step in leading to a finalized SUPL specification.
SUPL is a protocol that allows a mobile client to communicate with a location server over an IP connection. Openwave’s SUPL support means its location user plane activity now reaches from CDMA and iDen into the GSM and WCDMA network areas.
Openwave’s John Trobough, vice president of product management, acknowledges, “For nearly ten years Openwave has worked with CDMA, GSM and iDEN networks to successfully deploy both control plane and user plane solutions and maintain our position as an industry leader in commercial and emergency location services. Openwave location customers are leading the industry in bringing revenue-generating contextual services to market.”
Openwave Location Manager gathers a subscriber’s location from available sources including cell-ID and Assisted-GPS (A-GPS) to deliver information to the requesting application. Providing accurate location information is key to the success and usability of location-intelligent services. A pioneer in SUPL solutions, Openwave deployed the first successful commercial user plane solutions at major wireless operators in several countries.
