    3GSM Round Up

    ERICSSON…

Busy busy was the theme, as ceo and president Carl-Henric Svanberg hailed his company’s progress in HSDPA and IMS.

“Most 3G networks will be upgraded with HSDPA in 2006, and 3G is now a mass market in steady growth. IMS and all-IP is the next step to fully leverage the opportunities with mobile broadband. IMS will play an equally important role for the creation of multimedia services as HSDPA plays for the speed in the network,” Svanberg said.

“While HSDPA takes the access network to a new level, IMS and eventually all-IP will take the core network to a new level. The importance of IMS will become even more evident during 2006, when we are accelerating the rollout of services beyond voice and we start to really tap the potential of HSDPA”

Svanberg also addressed the WCDMA Long Term Evolution. “HSDPA is cutting edge and already has global presence and the necessary economies of scale. And it offers a future-proof evolution path — the standardisation of ‘Super-3G’ is already ongoing.”

In terms of product announcements there was the launch of a multi-access GSM/ WCDMA base station, which allows operators to combine GSM and
WCDMA in the same footprint, reducing costs for both rollout and operation of a radio network. The compact design means the base station can provide capacity of 100 GSM transceivers or 50 WCDMA carriers per square meter, or a combination of them both. It doubles capacity per square meter compared with previous  base stations from Ericsson.

The vendor also introduced its new generation of 3G base stations, called RBS 3000. The product portfolio is already available for the 850, 1900 and
2100MHz frequency bands. It will also support all coming frequency bands, including 900, 1700, 1800, 1700/2100 and 2500MHz, a frequency flexibility that mirrors Nokia’s approach.

The portfolio is based on the new Ericsson design base R3 hardware platform, with standardised modules for baseband, control, radio and filter functionality.
