    Bite to launch 3G in Latvia and Lithuania

    Baltic operator Bite, part of the TDC group, has said it will launch 3G services in Lithuania in April 2006, and in Latvia in June.

    A company statement said that five cities in Lithuaina will have coverage by April, with 20 more cities covered by autumn, with a total target of forty towns covered eventually, covering about half the population. Network investment will reach one billion Litas (about 280 million EUR), the operator said.

    The operator said it would have 20 3G handsets available by the year end.will also launch a 3G portal with the network launch, with a plan to ofer 20 TV channels.

    Maarten van Engeland, ceo of Bite Group, said 3G would complement the operator’s existing EDGE network, which currently reaches around two million people in the country.

    There was also mention of HSPDA, but it is unclear when the operator plans to launch HSDPA. When we know we’ll update the story.
