TeliaSonera sees Sense with new connected car platform

    -

TeliaSonera has launched a new cloud-based platform offering connected car services to both old and new vehicles.

Telia Sense offers a mix of car control functionalities, connectivity solutions and value-added services that can be accessed though an accompanying smartphone app.

Functionality is delivered through a hardware unit, which consists of a telematics system containing a SIM card. This provides the driver with “smart” features such as real-time diagnostics and notifications to encourage “pro-active car maintenance”.

The unit can be retrofitted into vehicles dating back to 2001 via the on-board OBD-2 port and also provides security alerts in the event that the vehicle is damaged or broken into.

TeliaSense will be offered as a subscription-based service, with connectivity delivered via 4G hotspots. It will launch in Sweden during 2016, with further rollouts in the Nordics and Baltics to follow.

According to the operator, the connected car market in the Nordics is expected to hit €1.8 billion in 2017, compared to €200 million three years ago.

Hans Dahlberg, Head of TeliaSonera Global M2M Services, said: “As a new generation telco we want to be a key player in developing IoT ecosystems together with our partners and customers. The connected car is a case in point; by combining our partners’ industry know-how with our connectivity we create an amazing experience for car owners, drivers and passengers.”

TeliaSonera has also partnered with automotive insurance companies to offer performance-based car insurance.

Jens Henriksson, CEO of Swedish insurance company Folksham, said: “Safer driving is important from a human as well as more environmentally friendly perspective. The combination of our engagement in our customers and focus for safer driving with the expertise and connectivity by Telia is the first step out of many towards the future of connected insurances.”
