Nokia Networks lifts lid on first SON product since Eden Rock buy

    -

Nokia Networks has launched its first self-organising networks (SON) product since completing its takeover of Eden Rock.

The vendor bought the SON specialist in May and announced today the Nokia Eden-NET product. The solution brings together features from Nokia’s iSON Manager and Eden Rock’s Eden-NET offering.

Nokia said the new solution allows operators to improve the performance and reliability of its network through automated processes. Operators are able to create new SON modules to address particularly problematic areas of the network.

The vendor said the open framework would allow operators to innovate new SON features on top of it. The solution also supports OSS interoperability, after Nokia signed agreements with a range of different vendors.

Ken Rehbehn, Principal Analyst, 451 Research, said: “Mobile network operators must cope with dynamic network environments that tax traditional planning and optimisation approaches. Open SON frameworks offer operators an important toolkit enabling agile responses to changing network patterns.”

Peter Patomella, Vice President, CEM and OSS, Nokia Networks, said: “Nokia Networks has underscored its intent to fast-track the evolution of self-aware, cognitive networks. We can now provide the best SON capabilities and expertise to help operators run their fast-evolving networks. They can accelerate their operations automation with available, proven SON modules and can also create new ones to address specific needs.”

According to Nokia, the optimisation and SON market will be worth €5 billion in 2018. When it bought Eden Rock in May, it said it wanted to reduce operating expenses, improve customer experience and profitability for operators. The Eden-NET product had 50 million subscribers worldwide.
