Ericsson, Facebook boost network performance with new methodology


Ericsson and Facebook have announced new methodology to measure and improve end-to-end network performance by using simulated Facebook applications.

As part of a joint project exploring ways to bring network coverage to unconnected regions, the two companies have developed a framework for evaluating KPIs on Indonesian operator XL Axiata’s network.

Indonesia has the fourth-largest Facebook user base in the world, yet 75 percent of users are on 2G networks. The new methodology is expected to help operators around the world.

By correlating KPIs gathered from application use cases with network statistics, Ericsson and Facebook said they were able to improve app coverage by up to 70 percent.

Specifically, they were able to improve both the number of connections completed within three seconds and the amount of time it look to load content.

Meanwhile, the amount of time it took to upload content was improved by up to 50 percent.

According to Johan Wibergh, Executive Vice President and Head of Segment Networks at Ericsson, the project has “raised the bar” in terms of understanding, measuring and improving app coverage.
