Cisco has installed a two-tier Hotspot 2.0 compatible Wi-Fi solution for Andorra Telecom, offering services such as Voice over IP and instant messaging.
Andorra Telecom, which is the sole operator in the principality, already offers a Wi-Fi service to the resident population and said the new proposition is targeted at tourists.
The vendor has used its Service Provider (SP) Wi-Fi platform to bring connectivity to the centre of the principality, with Andorra Telecom planning to extend it to ski resorts, shops and hotels in the area. The Passpoint-certified platform uses Cisco's access router, wireless LAN controller and Mobility Services Engine, which captures contextual information.
Cisco said it is also providing custom location-based services via its Connected Mobile Experience Big Data platform. This is used to provide information about network usage to the Andorran Ministry of Tourism, according to the vendor.
The two-tier system offers a basic service, giving visitors local, commercial and tourist information, and a premium service, offering VoIP and instant messaging.
Santiago López, Director of Sales and Operations at Cisco España for Service Providers, said the platform converted the Wi-Fi network into a technology with "similar functionality" to that of cellular networks.
He added: "Cisco Service Provider Wi-Fi is an end-to-end solution that enables operators to get the maximum performance from mobile communications, including the analytical capacity to implement innovative customised services based on location."
Jordi Nadal, Chief Executive Officer of Andorra Telecom, commented: “As operator for the Andorran territory, we have undertaken to extend the service we already offer to our telecommunications clients, at the same time as contributing to promoting tourism and improving awareness of our country, by offering visitors free access to shop Web pages and to applications at up to 20 Mbps."
