NSN launches new software features ahead of MWC

    -

NSN has added new features to its virtualised Operations Support System to help operators keep their networks running amid spikes in demand, as part of several enhancements to existing products.

Networks will now get real-time updates of issues according to subscriber impact as operators will be able to change the configuration of up to 10,000 base stations automatically within a few minutes, compared to the time required for manual reconfiguration.

NSN said this should help networks ensure a consistent service during the likes of power cuts, severe weather or an unplanned peak in demand.

Operators will also be able to run all of their services on NSN’s virtualised OSS platform, NetAct 8, in a new location in case of damage to a network operations centre. An updated version of its Service atOnce Traffica product allows networks to see how many customers have been hit by network issues and view them in order of seriousness of impact.

Meanwhile, new Centralised RAN software allows networks to link together multiple base stations and turn interference into traffic.

The vendor said this can effectively double the average uplink capacity across a cell, with uploads at the cell edge up to 10 times quicker. It added the service also increases a smart device’s battery life, because it does not have to transmit at as much power to cut through interference.

NSN has also added new features to its Liquid Radio Software Suite that helps networks move 4G LTE devices onto next generation mobile quicker, which can free up capacity on WCDMA. NSN said both products are useful for high volume, high traffic areas, such as stadiums or shopping centres.

Elsewhere, the Finland-based company has added TD-LTE and extra frequency bands to its range of Flexi Zone small cells, as well as Wi-Fi capability.

NSN said a new indoor pico base station is the industry’s smallest product and is the only indoor small cell device to offer the same capacity and use the same software as a macro base station, costing 30 percent less than conventional devices.

NSN has also extended its Liquid Applications to small cells, by releasing an enhanced Flexi Zone controller. It can be added to existing macro-cellular base stations to run small cells that are installed in its vicinity. The vendor said the product allows operators to use indoor and outdoor small cells for fill-in coverage near existing macro sites.

In its fourth launch, NSN has added new features to its Smart Wi-Fi product, allowing networks to automatically steer traffic onto Wi-Fi. Its CEM Analytics for Traffic Steering uses network traffic and billing trends to generate Access Network Discovery and Selection Function rules that determine whether a device should select cellular or Wi-Fi access. Previously networks had to input these manually.

The second new feature, NSN Dynamic ANDSF software, can be installed on smart devices and allow networks to steer devices onto the best radio access layer if a network is congested.
