DNA to open the door to the 5G smart home at Finnish expo

    -

DNA is set to showcase the 5G smart home at Finland’s annual SuomiAreena event, giving Finns the chance to try out next generation services.

The operator and Ericsson are also planning to install a 5G demonstration network at next week’s event in Pori, which serves as a forum for discussing politics, society, culture and sports.

The operator said its network will offer speeds of more than 1GBps on test devices. It is planning to launch commercial services in 2019, once it has acquired the necessary spectrum and depending on device availability.

Pekka Väisänen, Senior Vice President, Consumer Business at DNA, said: “The 5G connection on display at our Smart Home will solve the connectivity issues faced by many homes and low-density residential areas.

“It enables services that require a high, stable Internet speed in many of the properties where an optic fibre connection is unavailable or would be prohibitively expensive for the customer.”

It said its data consumption has grown by more than 120 percent during the past two years and it predicted this will continue into the 5G era.

Olli Sirkka, Head of Ericsson Finland, said: “We expect that the use of mobile data will multiply eight-fold within the next five years. According to our latest predictions, the number of 5G subscriptions, set for commercial launch next year, will surpass one billion by the end of 2023.

“In addition to providing fast connections for consumers, 5G is expected to be used in the health care, manufacturing and automotive industries and in the distribution of water, electricity and heating.”

Last month, rival Elisa launched what it said was the world’s first commercial 5G network but it lacks any compatible devices.
