MTS launches IoT platform ahead of cellular tech rollout

    -

MTS has launched an integrated IoT management platform to support enterprises’ connected device strategy and monitor equipment performance.

The platform features an open API and is compatible with the variety of IoT technologies. The operator said customers’ existing equipment and IT systems can be connected to sensors, cameras, robots and programmes.

Enterprises can manage the connected devices from a centralised location and can track product failures via the terminal or through SMS or email alerts. The Russian operator said this would reduce cost of maintenance and equipment losses.

MTS is targeting the agriculture, logistics, and real estate sectors initially. A vegetable storage company has already set up a range of connected smart meters to track its products’ temperature and moisture levels.

A spokesperson said: “Developing our own IoT platform is another step in the MTS strategy to be the go-to provider in helping business customers adapt quickly and efficiently to the fast-changing requirements of the digital economy, reduce their costs and bring their operations to a new level.

“For government customers, our IoT platform can become a driver for development of smart cities, smart grids and intelligent transportation.

“In the coming years, we will strengthen our presence in the IoT segment through open source platforms, cloud applications and the introduction of the Internet of things at any scale – from small stores, to large factories, cities and federal networks.”

MTS added it would secure data through a fully protected cloud and also use SSL and HTTPS encryption and anti-virus software from a cyber threat protection centre to safeguard customers.

The Russian operator has been upgrading its network for more widespread deployments of NB-IoT and LTE-M next year. Narrowband technology is available but in a limited number of areas.
