Telefónica Deutschland signs BT data centre deal to drive virtualisation

    -

Telefónica Deutschland is boosting its processing capabilities with a data centre solution from BT as it prepares to roll out 5G and IoT-ready services.

BT will provide additional capacity at 15 of its data centres in Germany where Telefónica hosts IT equipment such as routers and servers.

As well as the hosting space, BT’s service includes power, cooling and physical security.

The data centre capacity will support the operator as it virtualises its mobile network and speeds up the roll-out of services to its customers.

The contract is set to run until 2026, with financial details of the deal undisclosed.

Cayetano Carbajo Martin, CTO of Telefónica Deutschland, said: “Telefónica Deutschland is pushing its digital services in order to become a leading provider in the fields of 5G and IoT.

“The advanced data centre solutions provided by BT will help us secure our digital transformation and 5G investments by providing long-term reliable and flexible hosting services for our mobile network. The enhanced agility of these solutions will help us to speed up innovation, boost competitiveness and reduce time to market when launching new digital mobile services.”

Stefan Hischer, CEO of BT in Germany, said: “BT understands the challenges faced by the mobile industry and we share Telefónica’s vision for digital transformation.

“Telefónica’s IoT-ready mobile network will be one of the cornerstones of digital transformation in Germany, and we are proud to support them on their journey.”

Telefónica is undertaking a major virtualisation project across multiple markets, including Germany, Argentina, Colombia and Peru, called UNICA.

It aims to deliver a fully programmable network, dynamically shifting capacity to meet demand, simplifying the structure of a network and giving operators the ability to deliver services faster.
