BT tackles dead spots with Whole Home Wi-Fi

    -

BT has launched Whole Home Wi-Fi, a consumer product that uses repeater discs to boost Wi-Fi coverage throughout the home.

The system uses three 165mm discs, each equipped with four dual-band antennae, to create a self-configuring network within a building.

As a user moves around a building, the network switches the user to the most powerful Wi-Fi signal in an area automatically.

BT said in a statement that Whole Home Wi-Fi would eliminate areas without coverage, or ‘dead spots’, within a home.

The service includes a management app that allows customers to monitor and control the network. Users can see how the network is being used, who is online and can also shut down the network. In addition, the app helps customers find the optimal positions for the repeater discs through a step-by-step guide.

The device receives software updates to upgrade firmware and security.

Whole Home Wi-Fi is priced at £299.99 and sold through the BT Shop and selected third party retailers.

Erik Raphael, director, BT Devices and BT Wi-Fi, said: “We all know how important it is for people to get a great Wi-Fi experience at home and how annoying it can be when you don’t get that.

“Whole Home Wi-Fi is the first product of its kind to be launched in the UK. Its contemporary design will look great in any home and it leads the way in Wi-Fi technology and performance.”

In 2016, BT launched Smart Hub, a Wi-Fi hub designed to provide faster Wi-Fi throughout a building. It has seven antennae to support multiple users connecting multiple devices at the same time.

As well as blocking interference, Smart Hub monitors a network to check for problems and automatically reboots if necessary.
