Nokia and Sprint will deliver 4K quality video over a live 5G network at a sports stadium in the United States.
Fans visiting the Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara today (6 June) will be able to watch pre-recorded and live video on 4K capable televisions. The stadium is host to the San Francisco 49ers American Football team.
Nokia used a live millimetre wave system at 73GHz that supports beam steering. The system offers speeds of 2.3GBps with a spectral bandwidth of 1GHz and around one millisecond one way air interface latency.
Dr. John Saw, CTO at Sprint, said: “This demonstration of 5G capabilities is one of several steps we’re taking to bring 5G capabilities into field trials. We look forward to leveraging our deployment experience and working closely with Nokia to expand the use of 2.5 GHz and higher band spectrum as we evolve to 5G.”
Ricky Corker, Executive Vice-President and Head of North America for Nokia, added: “We are excited that Sprint is showcasing 5G, further underscoring the US’s commitment to and leadership of this important communications revolution.
“We’ve been a long standing partner of Sprint, and now we will work closely with them to deliver commercial ready solutions in line with their plans.”

The partnership is the latest between vendors and operators keen to set a precedent for 5G technology.
Last month, for example, Nokia said it was working with Russian operator MTS on deploying a 5G test network that would coincide with the 2018 World Cup.
