Ericsson, América Móvil to deploy 5G, IoT in Brazil

    -

Ericsson and América Móvil are bringing 5G and the Internet of Things to Latin America for the first time through new trials with Brazilian universities.

The two companies will deploy test systems for 5G and the IoT in Brazil from 2016 to explore how the technologies can support various industries.

The work, conducted alongside the University of São Paulo, University of Campinas and Federal University of Ceará, will look at how 5G and IoT can be used to advance Brazil’s healthcare, education and energy sectors, as part of the country’s wider digital agenda ambitions.

According to Ericsson, the 5G test system will allow telecom operators and various other industry partners to trial 5G capabilities on a live network, while the test system for the IoT will enable trials of low-power sensor applications.

Additional projects will focus on sensor-based autonomous communications systems, MIMO technology and intelligent radio resource allocation, the vendor said.

Hans Vestberg, President and CEO of Ericsson, said: “I am convinced the next generation of mobile broadband and the IoT, enabled by 5G, will further accelerate the opportunities to advance in areas such as health care, education, energy services and agriculture, and within new industry applications.”

Separately, Ericsson announced that it had completed successful SDN trials with Mobily today (Monday).

The companies have carried out field tests of Ericsson’s Dynamic Service Chaining technology on the Saudi Arabian operator’s network, which uses SDN to chain service functions together in order to create personalised service packages.

The trials have been conducted as part of Mobily’s wider network transformation plans.

Maziad Bin Nasser Al-Harbi, CTO of Mobily, said: “Our commitment to our customers is to provide them with an unparalleled experience, which includes faster connectivity, more reliable products, and services that are designed for them.

“Through our long-term partnership with Ericsson we have now prepared our network for the next step of transformation that will allow us to better serve their needs.”
