Sigfox launches eighth IoT network with Luxembourg deployment

    -

Sigfox has brought its ultra-narrowband network to its eighth country, enabling IoT solutions to Luxembourg.

The IoT company is working with operator POST Luxembourg and mobility solutions provider RMS.lu to launch the network to Luxembourg City and Ettelbrück. Currently, 30 percent of the country’s population is covered by the network, with plans to extend it nationwide by the end of 2015.

The network is powering subscription-based smart city services for the public and private sector, including water metering, parking, asset tracking and air-quality measurement. It is also helping to enable health care, insurance and logistics.

Sigfox’s network can be installed onto cellular towers and buildings and offers low-powered transmission of small amounts of data over large distances.

Jean-Marie Spaus, director of POST Telecom, said: “In addition to providing these essential IoT services, POST Luxembourg and RMS.lu will work with Luxembourg’s developers and businesses to grow the IoT ecosystem and create all kinds of new devices and applications. The Sigfox network strongly complements our existing wireless broadband offer and allows us to provide efficient, low-cost connectivity for objects that are designed to send small messages on an intermittent, as-needed basis.”

Luxembourg has become the fourth European country to deploy a Sigfox network this year, following Portugal, Belgium and Denmark. France, Spain, the U.K. and the Netherlands also have launched its network and Sigfox said further global launches are expected to happen later this year.

Rodolphe Baronnet-Frugès, Sigfox Executive Vice-President of Networks and Operators, said: “POST Luxembourg has the existing nationwide infrastructure to speed deployment of a dedicated-IoT network that will strategically complement its high-bandwidth services with a very reliable, low-cost and low-power option that is unique because it can scale to millions of connected objects.

“RMS.lu recognises the large business potential that the Sigfox network offers users of its products and solutions for utilities, industry and commerce.”
