Nokia gives its network mapping services a boost with Nice deal

News

Nokia Networks has bought advanced geolocation functions from Nice Systems, which it said it will use to bolster the planning and optimisation of mobile networks.

The vendor said the geolocation functions will be able to provide it with 3D mapping, which will give it better insight into trends in traffic and the performance of networks. In addition, it will build a competence centre based in Israel to develop future 3D mapping products.

Dennis Lorenzin, Head of Network Planning and Optimisation at the Global Services Business Unit of Nokia Networks, said: "Advanced network planning and optimization services are at the forefront of Nokia Networks’ strategic services to mobile operators. The evolution of small cells and LTE necessitates more accurate 3-D geolocation capabilities.

“Nokia Networks intends to enhance this unique solution in order to offer superior services to our customers, regardless of which network gear they use."

The acquisition will add to the vendor's existing 3D mapping capabilities, which it unveiled in February and is used to speed up the deployment of small cells.

The Nice Systems deal is Nokia Networks' second in 24 hours, after it signed an agreement to takeover US-based SAC Wireless. The company offers infrastructure and network deployment solutions.

Nokia said the deal would offer "clear revenue synergies" and should close by the end of September 2014.

Jorg Erlemeier, VP of North America Market Services for Nokia Networks, said: "As we continue to build an even stronger foundation for our US services business, we see great opportunities to help our customers address the tough challenges of network deployment. These range from indoor/outdoor small cells, distributed antenna systems, 4G LTE upgrades, and solving backhaul connectivity and bandwidth issues.

“SAC Wireless is to augment our existing network implementation service capabilities and increase the size and effectiveness of our delivery organization.”
