Orange Business Services puts IoT to use on saving ships’ fuel costs

    -

Orange Business Services has expanded its work with Dobroflot by developing a customised IoT solution for the Russian fishing company.

The France-based telco worked with Technodar on the new product, which sees sensors fitted to ships.

It said the aim was to optimise fuel consumption and costs, analyse weather and vessel position, and prevent unauthorised fuel usage.

Data from the sensors is transmitted back to Dobroflot’s onshore operations via satellite technology that OBS fitted on the company’s fleet last year.

Dobroflot, the leading manufacturer of canned fish in the Far East, will pilot the solution initially on a refrigerated transport vessel, which is used to navigate the Northeast passage through the Arctic.

It plans to roll it out across eight further vessels, including the world’s largest floating fish factory.

Orange said the Russian company would pay a monthly subscription for the service, which required no upfront investment.

Dobroflot CTO Evgeny Stepanov said: “The savings from Orange Business Services’ IoT solution will have a significant impact on our bottom line, as around half of a vessel’s operating costs are related to fuel.

“An active IoT system on board our vessels will enable us to collect data in real time and map the most efficient routes.”
