CTO of the Year 2017: celebrating technology leaders across the entire industry
The Mobile Europe CTO of the Year award recognises the central role Chief Technology Officers play in a modern operator. The award celebrates those driving innovation and displaying an agenda-setting vision that places his or her company at the forefront of the telecoms industry.
The search for Mobile Europe's fourth annual CTO of the Year award is now underway with new criteria and a new award to recognise all kinds of players in the industry.
This year, for the first time, we are introducing a Regional CTO of the Year award, to reflect the work a Chief Technology Officer is doing within a single market. It will be open to standalone operators trading in a single market, or CTOs within a larger Group doing innovative things within their regional market.
The larger players will be eligible to enter the Group CTO of the Year award, which is open to CTOs conducting their technology strategy across numerous markets at the highest level of the telco.
By having two awards side by side, we feel we are reflecting the true breadth of the market and recognising and rewarding innovation from the smallest to the largest telcos.
2017 and beyond will see telcos gear up towards 5G, apply the finishing touches to their LTE rollouts and continue network transformation at the heart of the company. We look forward to celebrating the very best the European telecoms industry has to offer.
Nominations close 3 March
The nominated CTOs will be pared down to a shortlist, with a winner chosen by a panel of independent industry experts.
The winners will be announced and presented with their awards at an exclusive CTO roundtable event and dinner in May 2017, in London.
Candidates for the 2017 CTO of the Year award must demonstrate how they have achieved in the following categories:
The execution of network changing projects during the past 12 months, such as extension of LTE coverage, or launch of voice over LTE.
The implementation and leadership of new technology, such as software defined networking or network function virtualisation, NB-IoT or other cutting edge services.
How customers have responded to the CTO's work, whether it's low levels of churn, high acquisition of customers, or adoption of new technology
How they have affected change within the industry, influenced peers and set the agenda with telecoms
If you feel you, or the CTO in your organisation meets the criteria above and deserves to be celebrated, please nominate here:

CTO of the Year 2016 - Bruno Jacobfeuerborn, Deutsche Telekom
Deutsche Telekom’s Bruno Jacobfeuerborn swept to victory as 2016’s CTO of the Year, wowing the judging panel with his broad approach to technology across the Group’s businesses, and his focus on customer facing projects.
Key achievements included his leadership of Deutsche Telekom’s shift towards an all-IP network, ongoing rollout of LTE and innovation within 5G. As chairman of the cross-industry NGMN group, Jacobfeuerborn has been leading the development of 5G standards and use cases.
Jacobfeuerborn said: “I am honored to receive Mobile Europe’s coveted CTO of the Year award this year. The recognition is a testament to the hard work of all of my technology colleagues throughout Deutsche Telekom. It underlines our efforts towards being Europe’s leading telecommunications provider through technology leadership.

CTO of the Year 2015 - Fotis Karonis, EE
EE’s Fotis Karonis’s highly aggressive and one of a kind LTE rollout strategy was at the heart of his CTO of the Year win.
He was hailed by judges as an enthusiastic proponent of technology and its benefits, as well as being savvy enough to handle multiple network transformation projects at the same time.
Since winning the award, he has stepped up to become Managing Director for IT and Mobile Technology across the BT and EE Group.
Fotis Karonis said, “It’s an honour when experts from the industry recognise and compliment achievements and hard work, and when I saw the other CTOs that I was up against for this prestigious award I was absolutely delighted. Innovation is at the fore in the European mobile sector, so this award is only going to become more and more important as it recognises the great work being done by technology teams across the continent.”
CTO of the Year 2014 – Enrique Blanco, Telefónica
Telefónica's Enrique Blanco’s reforming zeal for virtualisation impressed the judging panel of the inaugural CTO of the Year award.
Rather than prevaricate, he took the opportunity of the technology and ran with it in an array of trials and rollouts across the company.
He demonstrated the necessary ability of top level CTOs to gamble with new technology, realise its benefits and learn quickly from any mistakes.
The winners will be presented with the award at an exclusive CTO roundtable event and dinner in May 2017.
If you are a CTO and would be interested in attending our awards dinner, where the CTO of the Year will be announced, please email Justyn Gidley at firstname.lastname@example.org
The dinner provides an excellent opportunity to network with fellow CTOs, share ideas and discuss the key trends affecting your role and the wider telecoms industry.
