Three UK appoints Carlo Melis as Chief Network Officer

    -

Melis joins from Wind Tre in Italy and will be responsible for the ongoing transformation of Three’s 4G and 5G networks.

He has held several senior roles across network and technology integration at Wind Tre for the past 14 years, inlcuding responsiblity for the network integration following the merger of Wind and 3 Italia, implementing a new telco cloud core and the radio access network.

He joins Three UK at a difficult time. A number of key senior management and operations staff have left, including the high-profile CEO, Dave Dyson and the decision to go for a 100% Huawei-based RAN is looking disastrous after Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s latest decision regarding use of the Chinese firm’s kit in national infrastructure.

There have been reports of bedding in problems with the new cloud core too.

While the initial focus for Melis, who officially joined in April, is managing the resilience of the network due to the effects of the coronavirus, his responsibilities will include using the company’s spectrum portfolio to enhance the network experience for customers.

    Networking strategy

Susan Buttsworth, Chief Operating Officer, Three UK said, “We are delighted to have Carlo join our team. His extensive experience in network strategy and architecture will be vital to delivering the maximum customer benefit from our multibillion investment in technology.”

Melis added,“Three has been on an incredible journey, completely overhauling its network and IT infrastructure and laying the foundations for a 5G network that will dramatically transform the experience for its customers, at the same time as delivering major 4G improvements.

“I’m looking forward to joining Three, bringing my expertise to build on the great progress already achieved and to deliver a network that will stand the business in good stead long into the future.”
