Telefónica, Huawei hold SDN trial on Peruvian IP, optical network

    -

Telefónica and Huawei have successfully migrated commercial traffic over a software-defined IP and optical network during a trial in Peru.

Both companies claimed this was the first time real traffic had been carried across an SDN IP and optical network. While this kind of network played a key role in service transmission, it has a complex structure.

Telefónica said it wanted to simplify this structure in order to improve network efficiencies and reduce operating expenditure. The two companies conducted a prototype test, FOA verification and live network testing, and promised to explore the IP and optical solution within large scale commercial networks.

Pedro Planas, CTO of Telefonica de Peru, said: “SDN is the enabler to reconstruct network architecture in the future. With SDN, we can quickly develop more innovative services to meet various customer requirements and improve our competitive position in Peru’s telecom market.”

Telefónica is one of virtualisation’s most enthusiastic advocates, with a lab in Madrid exploring the tech, along with various trials.

Huawei has set up more than 30 commercial SDN projects globally, including data centre, WAN, government and enterprise private line.

Zha Jun, President of Huawei Fixed Network Product Line, said: “We are honoured to provide Telefónica with our commercial SDN solution to support IP+Optical synergy and network traffic optimisation. The long-term partnership between Telefónica and Huawei is helping propel rapid development of the SDN industry. Huawei will continue to improve its innovative SDN solutions, helping Telefónica achieve business success.”
