Nokia turns Cloud’s attention to mission critical networks

    -

Nokia has expanded its Cloud Packet Core solution with a dedicated product for mission critical LTE networks in verticals such as mining, oil and gas, and transportation and utilities.

The solution can support up to 50,000 access users or devices, as well as 100 eNodeBs. The Finland-based vendor said the solution is flexible and reliable enough to cope with the needs for secure delivery within mission critical networks by using its Cloud Mobility Manager and Cloud Mobile Gateway.

Among the features it can support is real-time CCTV feeds for security, mobile ticketing and infotainment over mobile broadband for the transport sector.

In the oil and gas sector, Nokia said the solution could handle the real-time processing and relay of information, as well as mission critical voice, video and data services, and the monitoring of staff through connected clothing.

Mining companies can also access CCTV over mobile, get real-time alarm notifications, monitor equipment and vehicles, as well as automate operations.

Finally, the utilities sector can connect sensors, substations and facilities to ensure safe, reliable and resilient electrical distribution grids.

Mike Sapien, Principal Analyst of Enterprise Services at Ovum, said: “With many enterprise customers, government agencies and smaller operators looking to create new robust business offers for their customers and end users, the ability to create a private network leveraging this solution will be very attractive.

“I see many large customers acting as service providers (“CaaSPs”) for internal groups that would also see the opportunity to create this private network, with the key requirement of interconnecting with other service providers (wireless networks, applications, cloud providers) and larger operators being enabled with this solution.”

Sri Reddy, General Manager of IP Routing Business at Nokia, added: “Our Cloud Packet Core solution leverages a native cloud architecture to purpose-fit smaller business and critical communications networks without sacrificing the ability to scale as needs dictate.

“All operators – regardless of size – get the same software foundation, rich capability set, field-proven software and high reliability. This allows them to fully embrace LTE today – and 5G in the future – to assure an optimal, secure and reliable experience and fully realize new mobile broadband, IoT and MTC opportunities for their business.”
