Deutsche Telekom launches security products, demos 5G in stadium

Deutsche Telekom has launched a new smartphone protection product and showcased how 5G can deliver new kinds of mobile experiences in stadiums.

The operator has described Mobile Protect Pro as an "ECG for smartphones and tablets". It continuously scans for attacks and malicious software so it can deploy countermeasures at the earliest opportunity.

It works across Android and iOS and is based on self-learning algorithms. Deutsche Telekom claimed it can identify unknown risks and attacks that other mobile security products have been unable to deal with to date.

The product is available initially to corporate customers for €1.99 per month per device, so long as a business has signed up to at least five licences.

The operator said it expects to roll out the service to consumers in future, but did not specify a date.

Ferri Abolhassan, Director of T-Systems and Head of the IT Division and Telekom Security, said: "Nobody can prevent cyberattacks, but we can give our customers the best protection possible – whether they are private customers or business customers from small, medium-size or large-scale enterprises. Our new solution offers an innovative approach."

Meanwhile, Deutsche Telekom has also launched a Mobile Encryption app to allow its business customers to make secure calls.

Costing €4.95 per month, calls included, the security keys are only generated on the smartphones used to make a call and are deleted as soon as it ends.

Finally, the German operator has teamed up with Nokia to show how 5G will deliver in stadium media experiences during sporting events, such as 360 degree renditions of action through virtual reality glasses.

The demonstration was held at the Berlin Olympia stadium. The telcos were also able to transmit several full HD live streams of the action in parallel using Nokia's recently announced 5G ready infrastructure.

Bruno Jacobfeuerborn, CTO Deutsche Telekom, said: "5G is set to usher in an exciting new chapter for Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality and other future digital entertainment services.

"5G networks will improve significantly the user experience by delivering faster, higher quality video and virtual reality content to consumers. As we are demonstrating here in Berlin, this could transform the in-stadium experience of watching live sports."

Markus Borchert, Senior Vice President, Market Europe, Nokia, added: “The technical development of 5G is progressing fast. It is now crucial to test applications and use cases in ‘live’ environments, using commercially available systems, in order to demonstrate the impact of 5G for consumers, industries and smart cities of the future."
