TIM delivers NFV project for Poste Italiane

    -

TIM has completed a network functions virtualisation project for Poste Italiane, bringing voice over IP services to more than 13,000 post offices across Italy.

The operator worked with IP-focused vendor Italtel on the project.

Poste Italiane’s private network has more than 50,000 users across a range of different devices. TIM said the NFV architecture dovetails with Poste Italiane’s existing systems, which are hosted in the operator’s data centers.

A spokesperson said: “The full compatibility of Italtel’s products with the existing infrastructure, the integration capabilities demonstrated by TIM and Italtel in dealing with the complexity of the existing network and the use of consolidated migration methodologies guaranteed the smooth transition to the final architecture, with minimal impact on network configuration and user experience for the active services.”

The operator said more than 20,000 users were initially migrated over several months, which it said reduced the space taken up in TIM’s centralised architecture by 75 percent and “significantly” reducing its energy consumption.

Among the Italtel products used were its Multimedia Communication Suite, which supports NFV and cloud, LTE and IMS, its subscriber data management solution, session border controller and management suite.

Earlier this month, Vodafone selected Nokia’s Nuage Networks to connect its global data centres. The UK-based operator said it would use the vendor’s Virtualized Service Platform (VSP) to roll out SD-WAN to enterprise customers.
