Tele2 has completed a €50 million network infrastructure upgrade project in the Baltics, after updating its network in Estonia.
The Sweden-based operator said it has brought 4G capabilities to its network and also built 540 sites across the Baltic region. Nokia Networks was its infrastructure partner for the modernisation project.
Work started on the project last year, with Tele2 upgrading its network in Lativa. It then turned its attention to Lithuania this spring before completing the modernisation in Estonia.
Niklas Sonkin, Executive Vice President for Central Europe and Eurasia at Tele2 , said: “We are delighted that our 3.3 million customers in the Baltic countries can enjoy superior mobile broadband. It is the most significant investment we have implemented in the region and it helps us to continuously deliver what we have promised to customers – high-quality services at low costs.”
The operator will be hopeful the 4G upgrade will help boost its “data dependent” strategy. In July, Tele2 reported service revenue hitting an all-time high of €324.3m.
However, this failed to stop the operator warning full year profits will be between €616.6 million and €627.3 million, down from its original prediction of €649 million. It blamed falling demand for voice and SMS, as well as the effects of termination rate changes.
Yesterday, the operator said it had installed anti-spam technology from Anam, after customers complained they were receiving SMS spam. It said that complaints regarding SMS spam dropped by 45 percent between November 2013 and February 2014 following the move.
