Telcos launch new IPX services to bolster voice

    -

Telcos have thrown their weight behind internet protocol exchange with Tele2, BICS and IDT this week launching new products featuring the technology.

By using IP technology, a company can offer multiple services across the same connection. Swedish carrier Tele2 is targeting its IPX solution at carrier, operators and content providers. It said the solution would allow it to provide the likes of streaming content, HD Voice and LTE roaming on top of its Eurocore network.

Tele 2 said the IPX product would allow providers to deliver their content in a more efficient and secure way. Joachim Horn, Executive Vice President and Group CTIO of Tele2, said: “There is a dramatic increase in the demand for data amongst our customers. In a borderless and data driven world, the technical connectivity solutions are key.

“Launching this IPX solution is yet another step in the neverending development of our networks, and to meet the needs of tomorrow.”

Meanwhile, BICS, Belgacom’s wholesale arm, has brought IPX to its voice platform, which it said will help operators to bring the likes of HD voice and VoLTE to market much quicker than before.

The network enhancement to BICS’s legacy First Class Mobile product means it will now offer call-by-call optimised routing, which it said will help time division multiplexing and VoIP transit to more than 1,500 networks globally.

BICS said the solution will help operators to increase usage of HD products and also drive new revenues. HD voice adoption is on the increase, with the Global mobile Operators Association stating more than 100 operators have deployed the product.

Jorn Vercamert, VP Voice Business, BICS, said: “The transition to next generation voice services will reinvigorate the voice market and increase its profitability. HD Voice delivers a considerably improved call experience for the subscriber, transmitting the human voice more clearly and resulting in more effective and natural conversations.”

The third company to launch IPX related services, wholesale carrier services company IDT, is also planning to offer superior voice services to operators.

Its solution is a Packet Voice Internetworking Exchange that it said meets i3 Forum and GSM specifications. It said connections benefit from increased security and higher quality of service compared to traditional voice.

Ben Hirsh, Chief Marketing Officer at IDT, said: “Voice calls can be up to 40 percent longer when the voice quality is crystal clear, so an offering like IPX can have a significant impact on the volume of minutes carried on an operator’s network.”
