MediaTek has lifted the lid on what it is describing as the world’s first 64-bit octa-core LTE system-on-chip (SoC) which offers 2K display support.
The MT6795 will be commercially available at the end of 2014 and is targeted at high-end Android handsets. The SoC will offer speeds of up to 2.2GHz per second and also has dual-channel LPDDR3 (low power double data rate) memory that is clocked at 933MHz. The Category 4 4G LTE chipset, which can hit download speeds of up to 150MBps, also offers more efficient power consumption through its CorePilot feature.
The SoC appears built for handsets offering high quality video playback. It can support 120Hz displays and can support the creation and playback of 480 frames per second 1080p super slow-motion videos in high definition.
MediaTek said: “With the launch of MT6795, MediaTek is accelerating the global transition to LTE and creating opportunities for device makers to gain first-mover advantage with top-of-the-line devices in the 64-bit Android device market.
“Coupled with 4G LTE support, MT6795 completes MediaTek’s 64-bit LTE SoC product portfolio: MT6795 for power users, MT6752 for mainstream users and MT6732 for entry level users. This extensive portfolio allows everyone to embrace the improved speed from 4G LTE and parallel computing capability from CorePilot and 64-bit processors.”
A report issued this week suggested that the emergence of Category 6 technology could lead to greater competition in the sector. Category 4 chipsets, such as MediaTek’s MT6795, shipped 42 million units last year although ABI Research claimed Cat6 chips, which can enable downlink speeds of up to 300MBps, will have cumulative shipments of 700 million units by the end of 2019.
