Manufacturers back Qualcomm after Samsung Galaxy S6 “snub”

    -

Qualcomm has shrugged off a reported snub from Samsung by announcing it has more than 60 devices in the pipeline featuring its Snapdragon 810 processor.

Samsung is reportedly looking elsewhere for chips to power its forthcoming Galaxy S6 device, which will be unveiled on 1 March on the eve of Mobile World Congress, after years of working with Qualcomm.

A range of manufacturers, including LG, Xiaomi, Motorola Mobility, Sony Mobile and Microsoft, came out yesterday to back the Snapdragon 810. Among the forthcoming devices that will be based on it are the LG G Flex2 and the Xiaomi Mi Note Pro.

Gen Tsuchikawa, Senior Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer at Sony Mobile, said: “Whether it’s long-lasting battery life, watching the latest movies or enjoying music in Hi-Res Audio quality, our customers are increasingly demanding more from their Xperia device to deliver the latest content and entertainment experiences.

“We’re excited about the new capabilities of the Snapdragon 810 processor and are looking forward to working with Qualcomm Technologies as we bring new Xperia products to consumers later this year.”

Snapdragon 810 processors support Cat 9 LTE, with speeds of up to 450MBps. They offer 4K resolutions, 64-bit processing between quad-core ARM A57 CPUs and quad-core ARM A53s, and support cameras of up to 55MP. Others features include support for LTE-Broadcast and VoLTE, along with carrier aggregation across three bands.

Qualcomm Technologies’ Executive Vice-President Murthy Renduchintala commented: “The smartphone experience at the premium tier will be defined by products that don’t compromise on performance, connectivity and entertainment, and Snapdragon 810 will be at the heart of enabling these features. With a growing design pipeline currently in excess of 60 devices, we’re excited about the innovation our OEM customers will unlock for consumers who demand superior mobile experiences in 2015.”
