LTE deployments are driving huge growth in mobile infrastructure security, with spending set to grow by a compound annual growth rate of 42 percent, new research has claimed.
Operators were playing “catch-up” by installing Gi/SGi firewalls, with spending in this area set to almost double by 2018, according to a new report from Infonetics.
This sector will be bolstered by a range of improvements to deal with issues of mobile traffic control and security.
The research firm said AdaptiveMobile and Cloudmark were the market leaders in the SMS and MMS security gateway sector, although they warned both companies will need to move their business models from those who wish to save money and meet regulations to those wanting into increase the security of their networks and subscribers.
Jeff Wilson, Principal Analyst for Security at Infonetic Research, commented: “Mobile infrastructure security is incredibly hot right now. Providers are trying to protect subscribers and revenue by investing in SMS/MMS security gateways to the tune of a massive 42 percent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) from 2013 to 2018.
“Operators are also trying to protect the boundary between their networks and the internet. Gi/SGi firewall revenue is on a serious ramp as well, driven by the huge LTE deployments around the globe that have left many mobile providers with massive all-IP networks that need protection from every type of threat on the internet.”
Last month, Nokia said it was setting up a new security unit because of the increasing threats to LTE networks.
It said that the shift towards virtualisation would lead to more security products being developed to protect them.
